How to Organize Your First Football Tournament
How to Organize Your First Football Tournament
Running a tournament sounds complicated, but with the right tools it's straightforward. Here's how to do it with SquadLock.
Step 1: Choose Your Format
- •5-a-side — Quick games, less space needed, easier to fill teams
- •7-a-side — Good balance of tactics and accessibility
- •11-a-side — Full-format football, needs a proper pitch and bigger squads
Step 2: Set the Details
In SquadLock, go to Tournaments > Create and fill in: - Tournament name - Date, time, and venue - Max teams (we recommend 6-8 for a half-day tournament) - Entry fee (if any) - Whether to allow free agents
Step 3: Open Registration
Once created, open registration and share the link. Teams can register through the app. Free agents can sign up individually — SquadLock's snake-draft algorithm will assign them to balanced pickup teams.
Step 4: Generate the Bracket
Once you have enough teams, hit Generate Bracket. SquadLock auto-selects the best format: - 4 or fewer teams → Round-robin (everyone plays everyone) - 5-8 teams → Single elimination knockout - 9+ teams → Group stage then knockout
Step 5: Run the Tournament
On match day: - Report scores as each game finishes - Winners automatically advance in knockout brackets - Standings update in real-time - Post announcements to keep everyone informed
Tips for Success
- •Start on time — Football tournaments always run late. Build in buffer time.
- •Have a backup ref — Even casual tournaments need someone to make calls.
- •Provide water — Players will thank you.
- •Take photos — Great for sharing and promoting future tournaments.
Good luck with your first tournament!
